Free web hosting, why is it a bad idea?

Within the UK market there are two types of web hosting that are available, paid hosting and free web hosting. Many are often immediately attracted to the word “free” that is inevitably stands out in big, bold and flashing letters. There is a saying that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Free web hosting is exactly the same, if it is free you are likely to be caught out by a number of issues and pitfalls that will ultimately have a huge negative impact on your website.

Small bandwidth

Most website hosting companies offer free web hosting with a very small monthly bandwidth allowance which maybe 1 or 2gb every month. This certainly sounds like enough. However often because it is free, these free accounts are gathered into one or very few servers, ultimately leading to overcrowding. This will likely increase the load on the server and often this will lead to your website being offline more often or may be slower compared to paid hosting.

If your website is down or slow at loading this will have a huge negative impact on your visitors who will get annoyed when they cannot visit your website or it is taking longer than typing your competitors name into Google. We have a dedicated team that closely monitor the performance of all our servers to ensure that any performance issues that occur are dealt with swiftly and effectively.

If you have a really popular website and exceed your bandwidth allowance, your website will not be accessible and you will either have to wait until next months allocation or pay a fee to make it available again which can be costly. This is why we offer unlimited bandwidth on all our plans so that you never have to be worried about being locked out of your website.

It is often the case that some companies if they are providing you with free hosting will display advertisements on your webs site. This if you are a business look very unprofessional and will likely lead to your visitors becoming annoyed. You should not have any banners or pop ups that are not related to your business or that you do not have any control over. At Ansford Internet we do not advertise on your hosting, as long as you meet our terms and conditions you can use your hosting how you would like.

Lack of features

If you use free hosting it will not be long until you realise that you do not have all the features that you wanted. Some will not offer you one click installs, database support just to name a few. The most shocking is some that do not even offer you an email account or autoresponders for your email accounts. These are all standard on all our plans and are standard throughout the rest of the industry.

Not a professional/personal domain

Many free hosting do not allow you to use your own domain forcing you to be based with a subdomain under the providers main website. This will not only look professional, however it makes it difficult to move to paid hosting. It also makes it difficult for search engine rankings and promoting your website, and you are often subjected to a longer web address than you would like.

No professional email addresses

If you do not have a professional email address that reflects your domain name and your business this does not look professional. If you use Gmail or Hotmail account it can often cause for customers not to trust you, as they feel that you are not committed and may disappear suddenly. Often spammers often use these accounts and this can cause suspicion.

We get a lot of emails from non-professional email addresses in the office offering to partner with us or offer us services to sell. If it is not a professional email address, we will not even read the email, because from experience they often are too much trouble.

Limited Technical Support

In order to maintain free hosting, many do not offer technical support or will not put every effort in helping you and you could await a slow response. We have a dedicated support team to help you with any problem.

Free hosting and free websites are just more hassle than they are worth (which is nothing!). Often they are a very good idea at the time and people use them with the best intentions but often people get stuck with them and are unable to progress their business further.

For very little from £25 a year you can have a professional hosting plan with hundreds of features, professional 24/7 support and 99.9% uptime guarantee from Ansford Internet.
